LH DEFENDS TITLE IN THE NSPC
June 10, 2009LORMA HIGHLIGHTS maintained their tittle and was proclaimed once again as the BEST BROADSHEET in the 10th Gawad Ernesto Rodriguez Jr, the annual contest held by the College Editors Guild of the Philippines during the 69th National Student Press Convention on May 19, 2009 at Kanlurang Mayao, Lucena City.
This was the second time that LH received a major award after winning in the 8th Gawad ERJ last May 26, 2008 in the same category.
“After the professionalism and craft embedded on the publications of the other universities and colleges out there, our win is very unexpected. May himala nga talaga,” said Arvelyn Gacayan, LH’s photojournalist.
Gawad ERJ is a part of CEGP’s objective to raise standard campus journalism and develop consciousness and patriotic student writers. In addition, this aims to give recognition to the outstanding quality of college publications.
Criteria for judging takes into the account a large part of the technical excellence and content of each articles which made LH broadsheet be on top of other publications.
Meanwhile, The Rock of San Pedro College and Flambeau of SCT College tied up in the second place followed by Heraldo Filipino of De La Salle University-Dasmarinas in the third place.
Upon knowing the new achievement of LH, Mr. Jose Mainggang, the school director, expressed his appraisal, “It was an excellent performance indicative of the quality training and exposure of LH staffers coupled with their excellent discipline. In anything you do, everything is possible provided that you give focus to it with courage and determination.”
Judges of the said category includes Mr. Bobby Tuazon, the director for policy study of the Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG), Mr. Vijae Alquisola, the national president of the CEGP, Mr. Tonyo Cruz, a reporter for the Manila bureau of the Asahi Shimbun and other prominent images in the field of campus journalism namely Ms. Ilang ilang Quijano, Ms. Rowena Paraan and Mr. Carlos Piocos III.
Winners in the other categories were:Alipato of De La Salle University-Dasmarinas for the alternative category; Palad of De La Salle University-Dasmarinas for the Literary Folio category; Crusaders by Xavier University for the magazine category; and the Philippine Collegian of University of the Philippines-Diliman for the tabloid category.
Furthermore, Kartilya of University of Mindanao-Pol. Sci. Discipline and Earist Technozette of Earist Manila received a special citation award.
Representatives from Lorma Highlights who attended the said event were Lovely Ulpindo(Internal Managing Editor), Rachel Dennise Galang(External Managing Editor), Arvelyn Gacayan (Senior Photojournalist) and Jan Marc Talvera(Web Manager).
